Materials You Will Need:
- Natural Kandla Grey Sandstone Slab
- Base material (such as crushed stone or gravel)
- Landscape fabric
- Masonry saw or chisel
- Rubber mallet or dead blow hammer
- Level
- Jointing sand
- Broom or brush
- Protective gloves and eyewear
- Site Preparation: Prepare the area where the sandstone slabs will be installed by clearing any vegetation, debris, or existing paving. Ensure that the ground is level and properly compacted to provide a stable base for the slabs.
- Edge Restraints: Install edge restraints along the perimeter of the area where the sandstone slabs will be laid. Edge restraints help to keep the slabs in place and prevent them from shifting over time. Use sturdy materials such as metal or plastic edging, or concrete kerbs, and make sure they are securely anchored into the ground.
- Bedding Layer: Create a bedding layer using a mixture of sharp sand and cement in a ratio of 4:1. Spread the bedding layer evenly over the prepared area to a depth of approximately 35-50mm (1.4-2 inches). Use a rake or a screeding board to level the bedding layer, ensuring that it is smooth and even.
- Laying the Slabs: Carefully place the Natural Kandla Grey Sandstone Slabs onto the prepared bedding layer, starting from one corner and working your way across the area. Leave a gap of about 10-15mm (0.4-0.6 inches) between each slab for jointing.
- Alignment and Leveling: Use a rubber mallet and a spirit level to align and level the slabs. Tap gently with the rubber mallet to adjust the height and alignment of the slabs until they are level with each other and the desired height.
- Jointing: Once all the slabs are laid and levelled, fill the gaps between the slabs with jointing material, such as dry jointing sand or mortar. Brush the jointing material into the gaps and use a pointing trowel to compact and smooth it.
- Finishing: Clean the surface of the sandstone slabs with a damp cloth or sponge to remove any excess jointing material.
- Sealing (optional): If desired, you can apply a sealant to the surface of the Natural Kandla Grey Sandstone Slabs to enhance their durability and protect them from staining.
- Regular Maintenance: Regularly sweep or hose down the sandstone slabs to keep them clean and free from debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that may damage the surface of the slabs.
